Nakajima Kahô (1866-1939) Nihonga Butterflies and thistleSigned: Kahô hitsu Seals: Kenshô Technique: sumi and white on paper 113,4 x 29 Date: c. 1915 Mounting: beige silk 181 x 33,2 Condition: very good Kahô was born in Kyôto, son of the painter Nakajima Kayô († 1877), a pupil of Yokoyama Kazan (1784-1837). Kahô studied painting under Mori Kansai (1814-92) and calligraphy with his brother-in-law Tomioka Tessai (1836-1924), who was married to his sister Tatsu. Kahô also studied haiga works by Kikaku, Buson and Gekkei, from which he made his own unmistakable copies. He participated in a lot of exhibitions, including the World Exhibition in Chicago in 1893.
